It’s About Time – Adding Date Comparison Logic to Your Data Warehouse and Analysis Services Cubes

Dave DuVarney, Consultant Talavant

Analytical problems very often require some time element to make them relevant. There are many scenarios where end users need to compare one time period to another: year to date, this period vs. the same period last year, etc. There are a few techniques that can provide an incredible amount of insight into existing data by adding common date calculations. In this presentation we’ll look at three areas: 1. Common attributes used in a date dimension to facilitate time based analysis 2. Building a Date Utility dimension in Analysis Services to aggregate and compare data over time 3. Leveraging the Date Utility dimension and other attributes in front end reporting tools
